The new Garibaldi Square, conceived as an ‘Urban Courtyard’ following the interpretation of the Dutch woonerf, stands on an urban space made empty by the earthquake in 2012.
On a general urban scale, the project creates a new focus point able to connect the old city centre with the new urban context. The centre of the square has a triangular green area from which depart the pathways for cycles and pedestrians. The connecting element between the new building and the square is the ground floor where the theme of the historical portico is applied, this being the basic component of the local urban fabric: a fiber reinforced concrete portico consisting of eight bays with segmental arches is approached to the porch fragment that resisted the earthquake of 2012.
