RECUPERO DEL LUNGOMARE DI ORTIGIA
Redevelopment of the waterfront

Client: Municipality of Syracuse
Team: AM3 architetti associati, Monestiroli Associati, Arch. Francesco Menegatti, Arch. Massimo Ferrari, Arch. Claudia Tinazzi
Location: Syracuse (SR), Italy
Year: 2009

The project regarding the redevelopment of the Lungomare di Levante was an opportunity to rethink the complex relationships between the various parts of the city. In fact, the project area covers that part of the city where different types of structures meet: the Umbertino District with its orderly disposition, the “Graziella” representing the ancient urban pattern, the twentieth-century expansion of the Talete parking area, and the contact with the sea. This urban complexity identifies three different spheres, each bearing its own character but all interconnected.

The project involves the overall reconfiguration of all the spheres in a unified design that is also able to return character and acknowledgement to each one.  The intent is to help this part of the city to regain – as far as possible - its direct relationship with the sea.
The overall aim of the project is to put together in a sole system all the parts of the city that are still not connected with the urban fabric.
