“Indeed, there is no possible reconstruction for these fragments but, as Benjamin says, only construction: of another image of reality, of a different relationship with the world. Reconstruction presumes there be ‘complicity’ with the broken order, on the contrary, construction requires, first, the destruction of that ‘complicity’ ”.

Rella’s words are the basis of the process leading to the drafting of the project.

Initially it was necessary to identify the characteristics of the fragments that make up the complex of the Sanctuary of Hercules Victor, a strongly heterogeneous body, and to isolate them analytically. Then the fragments were recomposed giving them new meaning and coherence.
The operation tries to separate the elements according to different channels, and the chronological criteria is just one of them. The analysis of the complex attempts to find cross-cutting themes that can overcome time and stratification.
The process allows to identify on the soil the overall system in which are present all relationships between the parts. It bears concrete traces of the local structures through the time: the routes of the Canevari Canal and the rail tracks used by the paper mill, marked by traces of the pools once used for paper production.
This “horizontal palimpsest” has led the design process which is therefore concentrated on the museum itinerary as interpretation of the entire industrial and archaeological area.
