The parish complex is conceived as a social and cultural centre both for the district and the entire town of Licata. It develops around a cloister, an enclosed but permeable space, protected from the outside, but open to the city. The positioning of the parish complex within the lot is guided by the local setting and by the already existing urban elements.
The church building, however, does not follow the urban logic, since it is positioned according to liturgy in the traditional East-West orientation, and stands on a higher level than the rest of the complex. The church is thus oriented and the whole liturgical path runs from the door to the altar in the direction that the sun marks in its cosmological journey at dawn on December 4th, the day of the feast of Saint Barbara.
