School in Isnello
School in Isnello, Isnello, Palermo — 2025

The new Luigi Pirandello school complex is far more than a building: it is an act of faith in the inner territories and a bulwark against depopulation. In Isnello this work becomes a model of social, cultural and environmental regeneration, capable of restoring centrality to the community, looking to the future of the Madonie by investing in young people as a fundamental resource for growth and resilience.

The school arises from the demolition of the old building and the construction of a modern, safe and functional complex, able to host two nursery sections, one primary and one lower-secondary section, as well as a canteen, gymnasium and shared spaces. Developed over two levels for a total area of about 1,760 sqm, it was designed according to the most recent guidelines for school buildings, focusing on flexibility, modularity and innovative learning environments.

Architecturally, the school is conceived as a place of community and encounter. The project interprets the qualities of the site, inserting itself into the urban fabric of Isnello with a compact, measured volume that dialogues with the street front and opens towards the valley, in continuity with the sequence of buildings defining the edge of the town.

The interior spaces follow a flexible, modular model that overcomes the rigidity of the frontal lesson. The central agora, the distributive and symbolic heart of the school, is lit from above and conceived as a multifunctional environment for collective activities, performances and moments of sociability.

The intervention is distinguished by its attention to environmental sustainability and dialogue with the landscape of the Madonie: the new volume, lower and more harmonious than the previous one, is marked by a façade that reinterprets the colours of the local majolica in a contemporary key, with dry construction solutions and EPD-certified materials favouring local production.
