The design competition called for a proposal for the extension of the Ragusa hospital. The conceptual process developed around two themes: the possibility of connecting to the countryside extending to the west of the area, and the need to simplify and reduce the connection routes with the existing hospital.

The new hospital slab is set parallel to the existing hospital and follows its general distributive criterion, with the "day hospital" services on the first two levels and the inpatient areas on the three upper levels. The central space was rethought as a Mediterranean garden within which small pavilions of connection and hinge between the existing and the extension are arranged.
